The Challenges Shops Face: Upholstery Edition

Over the years StreetWorks has had a lot of experience with outsourcing its upholstery work. By doing so we have learned that if you want something done right, you must do it yourself with the most talented people. Luckily for us we were able to make that a reality around 2013 when Earl joined our team. His background is extensive and being that he was highly recommended by John Ling of Silverstone, we knew he was the guy for us.

Some tales of our experiences:

The Aston Martin:

One of our top clients, unfortunately, had a small fire in his garage which caused smoke damage to one of his vehicles’ interior. He asked us to do a full interior restoration but due to the newly formed internal upholstery department with Earl it was going to be difficult to meet his time frame but a shop in Chicago was recommended to him by an acquaintance, so the car went there. Six months later the client asked Matt to go review the work upon pick up. There were indeed cars there being restored and a full upholstery shop but unfortunately the work performed did not meet the quality one would expect for an Aston Martin little loan a Geo Metro. The high price tag was paid, and the car went straight to our shop where we relied on Earl to do his best at correcting a majority of the main issues.  This is when the main foundation for an internal upholstery department was established.

The Lancia:

Once again, we were faced with outsourcing an upholstery job to a recommended shop, this time in Milwaukee but unfortunately it took a very long time, came with a hefty price tag, and lacked critical details such a poor fitting seat foam, unaligned stitching, and loose fitting welt cords, all of which are big concerns for this rare Italian Sports Car. The bill was paid, and it came back to our shop where we relied on Earl to fix it. These two examples give you a small glimpse into the timely and costly challenges we faced over the first decades in the industry. We have learned that the best upholsterers stand out from the crowd, and it is best to keep as much as you can internally to provide the highest quality work and customer service possible.
